Philosophy

Piano lessons are fun and fulfilling. They allow us to express ourselves and learn about others. They provide goals to be met today, tomorrow and years in the future.

Teaching Style

I believe strongly that children should learn to read music. It is unfortunate when a student learns solely by imitation and graduates without a good understanding of how to learn music on their own. My goal as a teacher is to empower the student to learn what they want.

That being said, piano pedagogy has advanced considerably from twenty years ago. Where once was taught F-A-C-E and memorization of specific notes, studies have shown an intervallic approach is easier and yields better reading skills. In my own experience, I have been blown away by how children pick up intervallic reading.

For adults, reading music and playing a certain piece may be your goal. Or it may be to play by ear, or play popular tunes. I have a strong background in music theory and composition. Fake books are second nature. I have performed classical repertoire in front of audiences of a thousand. My goal as a teacher is to provide a pathway to obtain your goal.

Biography

I began studying piano with my mother as my teacher. I believe she taught me to love music. When I was thirteen I rebelled and studied with Robert Wyatt. Dr. Wyatt showed me that music is one of the endless, that there is always more to give.

After I graduated highschool I received a scholarship to study composition with Dr. John Boda and piano with Edward Kilenyi at Florida State University. Upon Kilenyi's passing, I became the piano student of Dr. Karyl Louwenaar. I graduated with a double major in Composition and Piano Performance.

I believe that Dr. Louwenaar taught me that both god and the devil live in the details. Dr. Boda taught me to see past the myth.

After I graduated university I moved around some, taught piano, and wandered at bit before deciding to move to NYC to compose in earnest. In NYC I earned most of my living playing for dance classes. I have played for Suzanne Farrell, Mark Morris, David Howard, various teachers at ABT, at Steps, at Broadway Dance and many, many more.

I have performed for a total of around 3000 people over three summers in Japan, playing for the Izumi Kawamura Dance Company. And, I've have recently finished composing and recording my Second String Quartet.
